Episode Transcript

Rowan welcomed a new baby into their life and expected to feel joy and connection. Instead, they often felt disconnected from their core and unsure about touch. The physical changes of pregnancy and birth left Rowan feeling like a stranger in their own body. Moments of closeness with their child sometimes brought up discomfort, sadness, or even numbness. Rowan wondered if they would ever feel “normal” again. When Rowan found SOFT, the focus was not on fixing or bouncing back. Instead, SOFT invited Rowan to start exactly where they were, without judgment. The first practice was gentle sensing. Rowan placed their hand on their abdomen, breathing softly and noticing any sensations—tingling, warmth, tension, or even nothing at all. Some days, Rowan felt grief for the body they once knew. Other days, there was relief in simply being allowed to move slowly and honor small changes. SOFT encouraged Rowan to give themselves permission to pause, to rest, and to acknowledge both loss and new beginnings. Little by little, Rowan practiced short moments of connection—placing a hand over their heart during feeding, noticing the feeling of their feet on the floor, or simply taking a breath when the day felt overwhelming. With time, Rowan began to rediscover moments of comfort and familiarity in their body. Touch became less intimidating. The process was slow, and there were ups and downs, but Rowan learned that their new normal did not have to look like the past. Instead, it could be built on small acts of self-compassion and presence. If you are adjusting to your body after childbirth or any major change, try this: Find a comfortable position. Place your hand over your belly, chest, or anywhere that feels neutral. Breathe gently and notice what is present. Allow yourself to grieve, to celebrate, or just to be. There is no right or wrong way to reconnect. SOFT teaches that healing and rediscovery happen at your pace, with kindness and curiosity.
